A) Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a syndrome unexplained by medical cause, affecting the ctntral nervous system, immune, and many other systems and organs. Originally studied since the late 1930s. To be officially diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, a patient must have the symptoms for at least six months.
B) CFS affects people of all races, genders, and social standings. Far more women than men get CFS. It may be simply that women are more likely to go to doctors, so they’re diagnosed more frequently. But it could be hormonal, though doctors can’t explain why. CFS occurs both in isolated cases and outbreaks. Many people with CFS remember a sudden beginning of their illness. People with CFS may improve after a few months, or after many years, or never at all. While some of them are able to lead a relatively normal and active life, others are bed-ridden and unable to care for themselves.
C) People with CFS suffer from exhaustion, and no rest can help. Pain in CFS may include muscle pain, joint pain, splitting headaches, a sore throat. People with CFS may experience forgetfulness, concentration difficulties, and "mental fatigue" or "brain fog". CFS sufferers are often sensitive to light, sound, and food (allergy), even to medicines. Many CFS patients have a slight fever. They have sleep problems, insomnia, anxiety, depression, irritability.
D) Why do people get CFS? Many factors can become the source of risk: personal or psychological problems, overworking, chronic stress, pollution. In some cases, vegetarian or vegan diets can cause problems. Sometimes CFS develops over years. People may not realize there is anything wrong for some time. Patients may believe they have a minor illness, or ascribe their weakened condition to stress.
E) The cause of CFS is unknown, that’s why there is no standard treatment for CFS. Antidepressants and tranquillizers are often prescribed to CFS patients, various hormones, immune enhancers, sleep aids, painkillers, antibiotics. Doctors often recommend to change the lifestyle – work less, to make dietary changes. Some CFS patients find relief in moving to warmer climates. Sometimes CFC sufferers are advised to go in for swimming or other gentle physical activity.
F) Chronic fatigue syndrome carries a considerable stigma, and has frequently been viewed as malingering, "wanting attention". Many people consider that it is easy to "invent" CFS-like symptoms for financial, social or emotional benefits. CFS sufferer may face disbelief and misunderstanding, and even anger, from families and physicians, and even lose jobs and relationships because of their illness. It is believed that CFS patients are at a high risk of suicide.
