New Zealand - General Information
The country geographically comprises two main landmasses — the North Island, and the South Island — and around 600 smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 2,000 kilometers (1,200 mi) east of Australia. New Zealand was one of the last major landmasses settled by humans.
A developed country, New Zealand ranks highly in international comparisons of national performance, such as quality of life, health, education, protection of civil liberties, and economic freedom.
New Zealand is long and narrow (over 1,600 kilometres along its north-north-east axis with a maximum width of 400 kilometers), with about 15,000 km of coastline and a total land area of 268,000 square kilometers. New Zealand's climate is predominantly temperate maritime, with mean annual temperatures ranging from 10 °C in the south to 16 °C in the north.
