Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Logistics is the task of coordinating material flow and information flow across the supply chain. Inbound logistics deals with links between the focal firm and its upstream suppliers (buy / supply side, purchasing), while outbound logistics refers to the links between the focal firm and its downstream customers (sell / demand side, distribution). Logistics supports competitiveness of the supply chain as a whole by meeting end-customer demand through supplying the right goods to the right place at the right time and of the right quality. Logistics helps to drive costs from supply chains.

The terms ‘supply chain’ and ‘supply network’ both attempt to describe the way in which buyers and suppliers are linked together to serve the end-customer. ‘Network’ describes a more complex structure. No organisation is an island: its inputs and outputs are affected by the behaviour of other players in the network.

Supply chain management involves planning and controlling all of the processes from raw material production to purchase by the end-user to recycling. Material flows from primary manufacture (for example farming, mining or forestry, a basic commodity) through various stages of the network to the finished product delivered to the end-customer. The supply chain is tiered in that upstream and downstream can be organized into groups of partners with which we deal. Thus if we place a car assembleras the focal firm, buy side comprises tier 1 suppliers of major parts and subassemblies who deliver directly to the focal firm, while tier 2 suppliers deliver to the tier 1s, etc. On the sell side, a company supplies to the national sales companies as tier 1 customers, who in turn supply to main dealers as tier 2, and so on. Distribution usually employs NDCs (national distribution centres), RDCs (regional ones), wholesalers and retailers.
